A charity facilities manager will be one of around 2,000 runners taking part in the Jersey Marathon this year – but, instead of stopping at the finish line, he will run almost double the distance of everyone else.

Alex Black works at Les Amis, a local charity that provides support and services for those with learning disabilities and associated conditions.

In honour of the charity’s 50th anniversary this year, Alex is due to take on a 50-mile run.

He will complete the Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon on Sunday 5 October with bib number 50.

But Alex’s challenge will continue after the finish line at the Weighbridge – passing all Les Amis’ residential homes, and ending with a lap of the running track at FB Fields.

Les Amis isn’t just a charity. It’s a family. It’s about giving people the chance to live with independence, with purpose and with joy

Other Les Amis staff and service users will join the facilities manager at various points along his 50-mile or 80km run.

Alex said: “I see the difference we make every day, and now, I want to do more. That’s why I’m running 50 miles: to push my limits.

“Les Amis isn’t just a charity. It’s a family. It’s about giving people the chance to live with independence, with purpose and with joy.

“The last 50 years of Les Amis’ existence has been a journey far more turbulent than the terrain on the 50-mile course.

“The success is owed to its community who have invested so much effort into developing true meaning behind inclusion and empowerment values.

“Completing the 50 miles is by comparison a very small gesture, but hopefully one that inspires and helps raise funds so that Les Amis can continue supporting beyond another 50 years.”
