Islanders can learn lifesaving CPR skills at public workshops in St Helier and St Brelade today to mark Restart a Heart Day.

The event aims to give people the skills and confidence to act if someone suffers a cardiac arrest.

Sessions are taking place between 9am and 2pm at Brook Street and West Centre in St Helier, and at the Enid Quenault Health and Wellbeing Centre in St Brelade.

There were 149 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests last year, with a survival rate of less than 10%.

Conor Quinn, Resuscitation Officer at the Health and Care Jersey Resuscitation Service, said: “When someone suffers a cardiac arrest, immediate action from bystanders can make the difference between life and death.

“Through this event we want to show that anyone can learn these skills.”

He said that “CPR is easy to perform” and makes the chance of survival “much greater”.

The event is hosted by the HCJ Resuscitation Service and the States of Jersey Ambulance Service, with support from Jersey Fire and Rescue Service and Jersey Heart Support Group. Representatives will join Ambulance Service staff to lead the CPR workshops.
