Islanders are being encouraged to take “simple steps” to reduce the risk of “opportunistic crime” after a man was jailed this week for stealing from insecure properties and vehicles.
Andrew James Richomme, who is already serving a custodial sentence for a separate offence involving a break and entry at a relative’s flat in town, was jailed for an additional year.
From October 2023 to August 2024, the 29-year-old committed multiple break and entries, and unauthorised vehicle use.
Police said that Richomme targeted commercial premises and vehicles during the hours of darkness, often gaining access without forced entry.
In several cases, vehicles were left unlocked with keys inside, making them easy targets.
Damage was frequently caused due to poor driving ability, leaving owners with costly repairs and insurance complications.
Detective Chief Inspector Mark Hafey said: “When someone interferes with another person’s property, it causes real distress and disruption. These crimes are not victimless.
“The work that goes into proving such offences is significant and often involves many different departments and investigative strands: Digital Forensics, CCTV work, Crime Scene Investigations, this is in addition to suspect interviews, victim statements and report writing and engagement.”
He added: “The States of Jersey Police continue to work hard to prevent and investigate crime.
“However, public vigilance plays a vital role and we urge people to assist by securing their property and reporting any suspicious activity as soon as possible.
“Together, we can maintain Jersey’s reputation as a safe and secure community.”
Police are encouraging islanders to “make life as difficult as possible for criminals” locking doors, securing windows, bicycles, and removing keys from vehicles.
