There’s a new name for Jersey politicians to get familiar with…
Alex Norris has been appointed Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice in new UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s first Cabinet, which makes him the minister responsible for the UK’s constitutional relationship with Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man.
While the Justice Secretary’s role spans everything from prisons to the courts, it also includes oversight of the Crown Dependencies and the constitutional relationship between Westminster and the islands.

It means Mr Norris is likely to become a familiar face for Jersey ministers whenever constitutional issues arise, from legislation requiring Royal Assent to wider discussions about the Island’s relationship with the UK.
From Nottingham… to No#1 Justice
The Labour MP for Nottingham North and Kimberley has represented the constituency since 2017.
Before his promotion, he served as Minister for Border Security and Asylum at the Home Office, having previously been the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.
He replaces David Lammy, who held the justice brief before Andy Burnham’s reshuffle.
