A popular Thai restaurant’s plan to reopen at Gorey Pier is “looking unlikely” to come to fruition this summer after it emerged that the removal of the deteriorating landing stage is not forecast to be complete before the last week of August.

The update from Tuk Tuk Thai comes not long after Ports of Jersey project and events support manager Kim Dréan informed harbour users that the works, which started in mid-May, needed more time than initially planned.

Ports had previously hoped the works would begin in April, “with completion targeted just ahead of the summer holidays”.

But Ms Dréan explained that works had been delayed due to the complexity of demolishing the historic marine structure, longer-than-expected scaffolding installation, minor design changes and reduced productivity during the recent hot weather.

Last month, Tuk Tuk Thai owner Theo Wansaram told Express that the restaurant, which closed in February after water leaked into its building and damaged the main fuse board at the Ports-owned property, was planning to reopen at the same location with a food truck instead.

At the time, he said he hoped the reopening would take place in mid-July.

However, an update posted to Tuk Tuk Thai’s social media yesterday stated: “As some of you may already be aware, the demolition works on Gorey Pier are running behind schedule.

“This means we can’t have a mobile food truck on the pier until the works have been completed and unfortunately it’s now looking unlikely that we’ll be able to reopen this summer.”

The update continued: “As you can imagine, this is a huge disappointment for us.

“However, we’re still hoping to find a way forward so that we can bring Tuk Tuk back to the pier as soon as possible.

“We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone for your continued support – it means a lot.”
