The National Trust have added another field to its ever-expanding network of green space in the parish of St Clement.

A purchase is due to go through the courts tomorrow after the conservation charity secured rights to acquire the field earlier this year.

‘Field 80’ was purchased in 2021 after a public giving campaign raised £50,000

It follows the purchase five years ago of ‘Field 80’ on Samares Lane, which stands adjacent to Maupertuis Farm. The field was saved from development in 2021 to form part of a so-called ‘green lung’ in the parish.

Incredibly, the National Trust managed to raise £50,000 to buy the field in just 37 days.

It is a privilege to have the opportunity to extend this ‘Green lung’ for both the wildlife and people of the area”

Alan Le Maistre, chief executive of the National Trust for Jersey, said the purchase represented a “tremendous opportunity to expand our work in St Clement”.

“We’re excited about what this means for the future of the area,” he added. “Particularly in preserving the parish’s unique rural character and the agricultural heritage of Maupertuis Farm and its surroundings.

“At its heart, the Trust aims to preserve and protect Jersey’s special, wild and beautiful places for the benefit of everyone.

“As Green spaces become ever more previous, it is imperative that we safeguard them and this is never more important than in some of the Island’s most built-up areas.”

The National Trust for Jersey looks after 36 historic buildings, 1,800 vergées of land and 19,000 metres of public footpaths.
