A specially designed home for a new species of otter could be built at Jersey Zoo, if plans are approved.

The proposal, submitted by the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, outlines a “proposed new otter house” along with “replacement fencing to the external enclosure and bridge.”

But the new facility is not intended for the zoo’s current residents. The giant otters, Fia and Alexandra, who arrived last summer, will remain in their existing enclosure alongside a giant anteater.

  • The fencing that has been proposed to be replaced

Instead, Durrell has revealed it is exploring plans to introduce a different species of otter in the future.

A spokesperson said the project is still in its early stages and “dependent on fundraising”, with support being sought from the public, trustees and businesses.

Plans show the new otter house would be modest in size – just under nine square metres – and built using materials designed to blend in with the rest of the zoo.

The exterior would feature a “chestnut-coloured” cladding, while new fencing around the enclosure would be designed to balance safety with visitor viewing.

The project drawings include a mix of post-and-rail fencing, solid panels and glazed sections, allowing clear views of the animals in some areas while maintaining secure boundaries where needed.

The new structure would be built next to the existing otter enclosure, with older fencing being replaced as part of the scheme.
