The Roger and Margaret Long Collection brings together the photography of a pair described as “instrumental” to natural history at the Société Jersiaise. While Margaret passed away some years ago, Roger is now 90 and still one of he Société’s “most active members”.

The couple’s collection was produced between the late 1960s and the early 2000s, and reflects their interests in entomology, ornithology and botany, with items of social interest “creeping in” from time to time to give the scientific collection a personal touch.

Totalling 28,000 colour transparencies, it is one of the largest collections the Société has ever accepted. According to Photo Archivist Patrick Cahill, the reason for accepting it was the “quality of the images, the detail of the cataloguing and the importance of the subjects covered to the island given the growing public awareness around environmental issues.”

The Société have currently digitised 3,000 images so far, and have developed a system to allow interested members of the public to help transcribe and catalogue the handwritten indexes from home.

They have now planned an exhibition of some of the photos, which should go on display in Jersey Museum’s LINK Gallery in June.
