Police said the blue pick-up was heading towards town around 21:00 on Saturday when it mounted the central reservation near First Tower and crashed into the black railings.

A red sea buoy and around 60 metres of rope fell off the back of the truck and were “left strewn over the road.”

Instead of stopping, the driver was then reported to have driven to the Esplanade car park.

A 25-year-old was arrested that night, but was later released on Police bail.

He was described by Police as “The man is described as white, 6 ft 2, athletic build, blonde hair and was wearing a multi coloured pastel short sleeved shirt, blue shorts and black trainers.”

Police are now looking for those who may have witnessed the collision, and wish to speak in particular to:

  • Two cyclists who saw the crash, both believed to be Danish holidaymakers staying with a family on the island
  • The driver of a dark-coloured vehicle – thought to be a taxi – who gave the suspect a lift from town to Maufant
