The Planning Committee are backing one – a revamp of Le Squez housing estate in St Clement; but have recommended the other – a state-of-the-art sports centre on a green field site in St Peter adjacent to the rugby club – be rejected.
If given the go ahead, Le Squez Phase 4 will see the existing social housing demolished and replaced with 17 one-bedroomed, 42 two-bedroomed, and 92 three-bedroomed, units. There’ll also be car parking. Planning are supporting the scheme because the new buildings are going up on a site that has already been developed.
But the department is opposing the scheme in St Peter because it means building in the green zone. Under the Island Plan – a States policy document outlining what can be built where – green zone area is protected from development unless there are exceptional extenuating reasons.
The Planning Committee meeting is open to the public and being held at St Paul’s Centre in St Helier. It starts at 09:30 with a coffee and lunch break. It’s expected to finish at about 14:30.
