Pétanqueurs of all levels are being invited to compete – fully dressed in Breton stripes and a beret – in a charity event for a cancer research charity.

The Charity Pétanque Afternoon is due to take place tomorrow at the Jersey Pétanque Club at Les Quennevais.

The money raised goes to the charity Jersey Friends of Anthony Nolan, the local branch of the organisation which works in the area of leukemia and stem cell transplants – keeping a stem cell register and conducting research.

Tim Hicklin, chair of the Jersey Friends of Anthony Nolan, said: “Most people know Anthony Nolan for its stem cell register, but fewer realise the incredible research taking place behind the scenes that helps improve survival rates and gives patients the very best chance of recovery.

“As Jersey Friends of Anthony Nolan, we’re proud to support that work here in the Island.”

He added that the pétanque event “is a relaxed, enjoyable event where everyone is welcome, whether you have played pétanque before or not.

“Every person who comes along is helping us continue supporting research that changes – and saves – lives.”

The Pétanque Afternoon starts at 2pm, with those taking part asked to arrive by 1.45pm and costs £10 per person, for two games of pétanque, tea or coffee, homemade cakes, and a raffle.

The charity said there is no experience needed, and people can turn up without booking. For more information, email jerseyfriendsofan@gmail.com.
