Just before 23:30 they led away the man – who police have not yet named – wearing a blue T-shirt and jeans, and the road was re-opened.
At one stage, an eye-witness reported that up to ten police vehicles were on the scene, as well as a fire engine and an ambulance.
Police were called to the homeless shelter in Lewis street, following up reports of a man causing damage and using threatening behaviour, as well as claiming to have a weapon. They say that he locked himself into a room, and to protect residents and staff, the police decided to close off the road.
A Police statement says that decided to deploy firearms officers, as well as trained negotiators, as the man was becoming increasingly agitated.
Officers eventually got into the room and arrested the man, without further incident.
