The Friday evening meeting at Les Landes racecourse was marred by the death of Jersey-Derby-winning horse Cueros.
Cueros was running in the Grosnez Handicap under jockey Victoria Malzard when the horse fell turning into the home straight.
The jockey was unhurt in the incident, but it became clear that Cueros had been hurt in the fall and emergency measures quickly enacted.
After approximately 15 minutes, it was clear to spectators this was a serious injury, and it later emerged the horse had been euthanised.
The stewards’ report said Cueros has suffered a catastrophic leg fracture.
Cueros joined Alyson Malzard’s stable from France at the start of the 2024 season and quickly made his mark, winning in June and going on to two more victories that season.
Last year, he won four times, including the Jersey Derby.
Transferring to Harry Derham at the end of the local season, he won a hurdle race at Newcastle by 14 lengths.
The last race on the card, the Les Landes Racecourse Handicap, was abandoned.
The next meeting, featuring the Jersey Derby, will be on 26 July.
