Officers said the incident was reported to have taken place on Beach Road last Tuesday (5 April) around 14:50.
“The driver of a silver BMW had been using his horn due to being blocked by a delivery vehicle on the road and was asked to stop beeping by a female resident of the area,” they explained.
“This resulted in some shouting and foul language which in turn caused another man to intervene. The two men then argued and the driver’s phone was smashed on the floor during this.”
Police are now seeking to establish exactly what happened and want to hear from anyone who saw what happened or knows those involved.
“The driver in his 40s was described as a tall, white man approximately 6ft tall. He was balding and had a ginger beard and he was wearing a pink sweatshirt, shorts and trainers,” the Force said.
“The other man was described as approximately 28 to 29 years old, 5ft 9 tall and wearing a dark jacket and trousers with a baseball hat.”
