Harriet Rouse, owner of online gift shop Harriet & Rose, had the idea for the event after the government announced the £100 Spend Local initiative.
The vouchers being handed out to islanders as part of the scheme can only be spent at fixed premises, rather than online.
“During lockdown, many local businesses adapted very quickly and went online, or to delivery, or takeaway,” Harriet said.
“When the government announced the £100 initiative, it became clear very quickly that online payments would, understandably, not be possible in order to keep the money in the island.”
Harriet immediately began thinking of ways that small creative businesses such as hers could benefit from the scheme.
“I knew I was going to have to think outside the proverbial box when it came to having a physical presence and ability to take cards.”

With 12-14 businesses participating each weekend, Harriet is excited for small business owners to come together for the event.
“I really felt that bringing the small business community together to all benefit was a much bigger picture than just one or two of us having a pop-up shop.”
“It’s a great way for people to come and discover new small makers and businesses that they may not have heard of – all while inside, and with the necessary covid precautions.”

The ‘Small Business Pop Up’ will take place from 17–19 September and 1–3 October.
