A 15-mile sponsored walk held last week raised over £25,000 for a local learning disability charity.
More than 500 islanders took part in this year’s South Coast Charity Challenge in aid of Jersey Mencap.
The walk between La Rocque and Corbière has so far raised £26,000 to support projects for children and adults with learning disabilities – including art, social, outdoor and fitness sessions for people with learning disabilities.
Organisers said this year’s event featured several memorable moments – including a marriage proposal on the cliff paths, which was celebrated by volunteers and walkers at the finish line.
The oldest participant this year was 85 years old, with organisers describing it as “fantastic” to see her return to enjoy the coastal challenge once again.
Alongside the main route, 55 members of Jersey Mencap completed a shorter accessible walk from Les Jardins de la Mer to Bel Royal.
The charity thanked the 30 volunteers who helped marshal and support the event, as well as sponsors Asset Risk Consultants, LibertyBus and Jersey Water.
Additional support was provided by St John Ambulance Service, the Land Rover Owners’ Club, Grouville Honorary Police, and Waitrose.
Jersey Mencap said the charity was “thrilled” to have sold out the event for a third consecutive year and encouraged islanders to book early for the 2027 challenge.
Chair Eleanor Jordan said: “Our charity membership continues to grow and, importantly, the South Coast Charity Challenge fundraising ensures our team can plan ahead for our 200 members.”
