There were no football-related arrests overnight, police have confirmed – with Islanders described as “positive” and “good-natured” as they were allowed to stay in pubs until 4am this morning to watch England’s latest World Cup fixture.
The Three Lions beat Mexico 3-2 in a thrilling game that kicked off at 2am on Monday 6 July, following a one-hour delay due to the weather in Mexico City.
Jude Bellingham scored twice and Harry Kane converted a penalty as a 10-man England squad held on for a nail-biting victory against Mexico to set up a World Cup quarter-final with Norway on Saturday.
A licensing extension – announced in Jersey on Friday – meant that pubs with World Cup permits were able to apply for another extension, allowing them to stay open until the end of the game.
A number of venues took up the offer, with Halkett general manager Estelle Gulliford describing herself as “blown away” by the news on Friday.
Police Chief Robin Smith praised officers, staff, honorary police officers, hospitality and “everyone who helped make the weekend such a success”.
He added: “Sport has a unique ability to bring communities together, and it has been wonderful to see so many Islanders coming together to enjoy the World Cup.
“The vast majority of supporters celebrated responsibly, looked after one another and enjoyed the event in the positive spirit that we know and expect from our community.
“We now look forward to the next game against Norway and, who knows, perhaps beyond and hope supporters continue to enjoy the tournament in the same positive and good-humoured way.”
