Tributes have been paid to the founder of one of Jersey’s best-known restaurants, who died last week.

La Capannina founder Tino Rossi passed away on Friday 29 May.

In a tribute posted on the restaurant’s Facebook page, the family-run establishment said “restaurateur extraordinaire” Mr Rossi would be “greatly missed by colleagues and customers alike”.

According to the post, Mr Rossi honed his skills at several local venues, including the Star Hotel at Weighbridge, Hotel l’Horizon in St Brelade’s Bay, and the Lobster Pot at L’Etacq, before opening La Capannina in 1966.

The restaurant, which is now celebrating its 60th year, said Mr Rossi had created “an institution that generations of islanders have enjoyed”, adding that his legacy would continue through the restaurant’s commitment to traditional fine dining.

Hundreds of islanders shared tributes to Mr Rossi in the comments.

Clare Le Feuvre A’Court wrote: “So sad to hear of Tino’s passing! It will be so strange to know that we won’t hear his jolly laugh and see his beaming smile!”

Stephen ‘Robbo’ Robinson added: “RIP Signor Tino. For 35 years, you kindly shared with me the wonderful hospitality of La Capannina along with your great team. Enjoy your long and leisurely lunch with your fellow restaurateurs in your next life.”

Matt Paul said: “My condolences to Tino’s family and friends! I will always remember the crêpes suzette – what incredible memories he leaves behind, he will be deeply missed.”

Jackie Boulter added: “Will be so sadly missed by all who loved the beautiful restaurant he created, and of which he was the heart and soul.”

James English wrote: “An absolute legend, not only of the hospitality industry, but of the island also. RIP Tino. Thoughts with all family, friends and staff of La Capannina.”
