Jersey Fire and Rescue received multiple 999 calls about the vehicle blaze – believed to be caused by a discarded BBQ – in St. Brelade shortly before 22:00 on Saturday (9 October).
Two fire engines were sent to the area from town, where they were joined by the Western on-call crew.
As they were on their way, however, “an update was received from the Combined Control Centre stating that the vehicle handbrake had failed and the van which was well alight was now threatening surrounding property”, the service said.
Two firefighters had to use breathing equipment as they tackled the blaze with a medium-size jet.
One islander had to be treated by paramedics after suffering burns to their hands. Those living nearby are understood to be “shaken” but safe and well.
After the blaze was brought under control, Jersey Fire and Rescue officials swept the area where they discovered a disposable BBQ.
They said residual heat from the BBQ was the “most likely” cause of the fire.
