Residents of an apartment block in St Helier who had to evacuate when a fire broke out in a nearby building have been praised for their “calmness and co-operation” during the incident after firefighters tackled the blaze.

Emergency services responded to reports of a structure fire in the West Hill area shortly after 9pm on Sunday evening.

Fire crews were confronted with a blaze that had taken hold of the refuse area in a building housing an electrical power station and storage, which had started to spread to the roof.

Residents of an adjacent four-storey apartment block were evacuated as a precaution, while the fire was brought under control.

At its peak, the blaze was tackled by three fire engines and 18 firefighters, who were able to prevent it from spreading further.

In a statement, the Jersey Fire and Rescue Service said that the scene was subsequently made safe and that no injuries had been reported.

Investigations into the fire are currently taking place.

“Watch Commander Ryan said he would like to sincerely thank the residents of the affected building for their calmness and cooperation throughout this incident,” the statement added.

“Their actions greatly assisted the emergency response.”
