The former Victoria College student’s performance of Jet’s ‘Are You Gonna Be My Girl’ at the second live show was not enough to keep him in the competition after judge Simon Cowell sent the deciding vote back to the public rather than casting it himself.

This saw journalist Martin Bashir – who forgot his words during his performance of The Commodores’ ‘Easy’ – keep his place in the competition.

Jonny joined the line up of X-Factor contestants for this year’s talent show with a celebrity twist.

Reacting to his elimination, Jonny said: “To go from the safe seat to this is position was a definite shock. It’s been really nice to get in touch with music again. I felt like I had a lot more to give but it’s a competition at the end of the day.

“I respect everyone here and I thank everyone for the opportunity. I’m sad to be going home but thank you to everyone who voted, I love you all.”

Jonny had a strong start in the competition after his impromptu duet with stalwart music producer David Foster during the first round in Los Angeles and then being told he had “set the standard” by Simon Cowell at the first live show.

Now, messages of support have poured in for the former soap actor from fans and fellow X-Factor stars alike following his elimination.

Jenny from quiz show the Chase wrote “you are incredible, keep being the amazing person that you are.”

His co-star from Strictly Ballroom on the West End Matt Cardle commented: “You absolutely nailed it bro… genuinely shocked you’re not still there.”

Another user said: “Keep shining. You deserved to go through more than anything.”

His mother, Collette Labey also posted: “We are all so proud of you back home. Keep climbing to the stars, our shining star.”

Posting on social media, Jonny wrote: “Everything happens for a reason! Got so many plans to get started with. This is just the beginning and I feel so blessed. Thank you!”

He also announced that following his time on the show he’s going to be working on and releasing his own original music.
