Plans for a “flagship” Jersey event, online training, and a business-focused enablement programme are some of the initiatives listed within a newly-released artificial intelligence “playbook”, outlining how the island can realise “opportunities” presented by the technology.

The 30-page document was created through the Jersey AI Council, spearheaded by Digital Jersey, with the support of a number of organisations including Jersey Finance, the Jersey Financial Services Commission, the Jersey Office of the Information Commissioner, the Institute of Directors Jersey and the government.

Established in November, the Jersey AI Council was announced as part of efforts to strengthen the island’s AI skills and capabilities.

The future will be shaped by AI and we must be prepared for what is coming

Last year, Digital Jersey chief executive Tony Moretta also revealed that an “AI plan” for Jersey was being developed, which he said could help realise “big opportunities” within both the public and private sectors.

Published this week, the ‘AI Playbook for Jersey’ breaks down how the island can harness the technology to boost productivity and strengthen its global competitiveness – particularly within financial services – and highlights a number of practical initiatives, including online training, a business-focused enablement programme and a “flagship Jersey AI event”.

Mr Moretta said the document would serve as “a foundational guide for Jersey’s AI journey”.

“It is not a plan or a strategy – it is a framework to provide organisations with common principles and objectives as they prepare for and explore the opportunities offered through AI and address the challenges it poses,” Mr Moretta continued.

“It offers a perspective on how Jersey can responsibly embrace AI as a positive force for the island’s future, because we should be in no doubt – the future will be shaped by AI and we must be prepared for what is coming.”

Professor Alan Brown – a co-author of the Playbook and adviser to Digital Jersey – noted that “there will be a lot of opportunity for change over the coming months driven by AI, as well as challenges”.

“That won’t be easy, and leaders really need to be asking critical questions of their organisations around how ready they are for change and effective AI implementation,” he added.

“This playbook is designed to help inform and shape that decision-making. If Jersey can get it right, the opportunities for AI to support Jersey’s strategic aims as a thriving business community are considerable.”

AI is transforming global businesses at speed and Jersey organisations cannot afford to ignore this

IoD digital subcommittee chair Ian Webb

Meanwhile, IoD Jersey has also released its new ‘AI Adoption Guidelines for Directors and
Senior Leaders’, which the organisation describes as “a clear and practical framework to help organisations prepare for the rapid technological changes reshaping every sector of the economy”.

The document seeks to address “key questions and concerns from business leaders
hesitant about AI” and includes “an AI readiness assessment, ethical principles, and a board-level governance model to support responsible adoption”.

Ian Webb, who is the chair of the IoD’s Digital Subcommittee, said: “AI is transforming global businesses at speed and Jersey organisations cannot afford to ignore this.

“Directors must ensure their organisations have a plan, the right governance, and the capability to adopt AI safely and effectively.

“The aim, with these guidelines, is to provide governance guardrails so directors and senior leaders feel confident developing their AI roadmaps.”
