A woman was taken to hospital yesterday after being rescued from a smoke-filled flat near Snow Hill.
Two firefighters in breathing apparatus rescued the woman, who was cared for by ambulance crews before being transported to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.
The fire service said that unattended cooking is thought to have been the cause of the incident.
Firefighters were able to respond quickly to the incident as the flat’s smoke alarm was working, which alerted neighbours to call 999.
Following the incident, Station Commander Paul McGrath said: “Unattended cooking is an all-too-common cause of domestic fires. Please do not put yourself or anyone else at risk by leaving cooking unattended.
“This incident also highlights the importance of how a working smoke detector can alert those nearby to a fire before it takes hold.
“Thanks to the actions of the neighbours in this case, the amount of damage to the property was greatly reduced and prevented a more serious incident occurring.”
