The ball court in Millennium Park will be transformed into a new community space honouring a much-loved Jersey basketball player and coach.
The Guillaume Memorial Court – known as The G Court – is being created in memory of Guillaume Hoareau, who died in 2024 after collapsing during an inter-insular game between Jersey and Guernsey.
The 40-year-old was described as a “keen” and “competitive” basketball player who enjoyed coaching younger players and often arranged team trips to France.
Work on redeveloping the Millennium Park facility in his memory is due to start tomorrow, with the new court expected to be ready by the end of September.
The vibrant design corresponds to the regional flag of Réunion, Guillaume’s home island.
The project is being delivered through a partnership between the Government of Jersey and the Jersey Basketball Association.
Following Guillaume’s death, the association established a dedicated legacy fund to create something lasting in his name.
Donations from Jersey’s basketball community, supporters and local companies helped the fund exceed its original target, while the government agreed to match the amount raised.
Local architectural firm ANY provided the design for the court.
Jersey Basketball Association president Paul Milbank said: “The G Court is a lasting tribute to Guillaume and everything he gave to basketball and to Jersey.
“This project shows what can happen when community spirit and government support come together around a shared purpose.
“We are incredibly grateful to everyone who donated, supported and worked with us to reach this point.”
Ben Bliss, operations manager for Parks and Gardens, said the investment would create a modern multi-use games area for the community.
He added: “Working in partnership with the Jersey Basketball Association and local supporters, this project ensures a fitting and lasting tribute to Guillaume Hoareau, while maintaining the site’s role as an inclusive and versatile space for current and future generations.”
