Guernsey FC women excited hundreds with a high-scoring win at their national league opener at Victoria Park on Sunday.

Number 9 Calleigh Hedley scored two hattricks in the game against Wimborne Town with the hosts going on to win 7-5.

It was the side’s first fixture in the English football pyramid system, debuting in the Southern Region Women’s Football League Division One South.

Hedley cancelled out an early goal from the visitors and then went on to secure her first hattrick within 22 minutes.

Wimborne’s Bell-Jack pulled one back on the cusp of halftime but this was again voided by Hedley in the 41st minute.

The visiting side improved in the second half, narrowing the score to 4-3 with 15-minutes to go.

But just minutes later Hedley secured her fifth goal, and was taken down in the penalty area, which saw captain Candice Bougourd covert from the spot to make it 6-3.

Hedley scored again in the 85th minute, while Wimborne clawed two back in the dying moments of the match.

Guernsey FC women’s next two fixtures are away but they return to Victoria Park on Sunday 28 September where they face Andover New Street.

Meanwhile, the men’s side faced a 4-2 defeat at Little Common, ending their unbeaten start in the league.

The Green Lions saw Dave Merris sent off early and the hosts scored a penalty, cancelling out Simon Arnolds’ fourth minute strike, which set the tone for the game.

The hosts commanded the game with two additional goals in the first half.

Niall Hainsworth clawed one back for Guernsey deep into the second half, but Little Common secured a final goal before the final whistle.

The side face Midhurst & Easebourne at home on Saturday 13 September.
