Guernsey’s basketballers suffered a day to forget with Jersey winning each of the inter insular matches for this year.

For the men’s and women’s teams the losses ended lengthy periods of back to back wins for Guernsey.

The tournament began in emphatic fashion on Sunday as Jersey’s Under-21s dismantled Guernsey 102-47 before Jersey’s women claimed their first inter-insular title in 27 years with a hard-fought 58-51 victory.

Jersey’s men then completed a historic clean sweep with a dominant 72-40 success over Guernsey to secure their first triumph in 14 years.

Adding to the occasion, Jersey players – husband-and-wife duo – Juliana and Kurslee Basse were named the women’s and men’s MVPs respectively.

“We’re absolutely delighted,” said Jersey women’s captain Basse. “This is a huge win for the team. Everybody played a very important role in this.

“In the third quarter they came back at us and momentum was shifting, but defensively we were really good and that made the difference. I’m very proud of everyone.”

The women recovered from an 11-9 first-quarter deficit, with Magdalena Walker and 13-year-old Maya Kraft helping Jersey establish control before holding off a spirited Guernsey comeback in front of a vocal Oakfield crowd.

Head coach Timea Kraft described the victory as a landmark moment.

“I’ve never managed to beat Guernsey as a player or coach, so this means a lot,” she said. “The young girls who came into the game were fantastic and that’s really exciting for the future.”

Earlier, Jersey’s Under-21s set the tone with a marauding display. Captained by Milo Kutvolgyi and coached by Callum Gilmour, the hosts overwhelmed Guernsey through relentless defensive pressure.

“Our press was unbelievable and completely took them out of the game,” said Gilmour. “To score 102 points and win by 55 is one of the biggest victories I’ve seen for Jersey. The exciting thing is we’re only losing one player from this squad.”

For the senior men, Captain Jake Michel led from the front, while Basse produced two crowd-pleasing dunks as Jersey powered to a comfortable victory.

“We’ve come so close over the years,” said coach Stuart Gilmour. “Our defence was intense and the depth of the squad really paid dividends.”

The clean sweep also carried a special family connection for the Jersey sides, with son Callum Gilmour guiding the Under-21s to victory before father Stuart led the senior men to their long-awaited triumph.
