The empathic victory was sparked by Ella Toone’s screamer in first-half stoppage time at Wembley.

They had been dominant up to that point, with 13 shots compared to Tottenham’s three.

Ten minutes after the restart they had doubled their lead, when Williams rose to head home.

Just two minutes later and the game was safe when tey were gifted the ball and Garcia fired into an empty net.

On 74 minutes, Garcia bagged her second with a first time strike.

Having lost last year’s final to Chelsea, it seemed that United had learnt the lessons from that experience.

It is a bright spot on what has been a below par league campaign, where they are out of contention for the Champions League spots.

Ineos’ investment in the club has brought hope that they can push on next season.

“We are obviously not where we want in the league, right,” said head coach Marc Skinner. “But we are history-makers for Manchester United. I didn’t need to remind the owners of that, they know. There is a lot of support and love for our team and the growth.”

Le Tissier signed a contract extension last month having joined United in July 2022.

She has been ever-present this season.

“We want to make Maya a key feature of our team for many years to come. Maya’s a leader and everybody at the club should be proud that she’s decided to sign for us long term,” Marc Skinner said at the time.
