Guernsey’s Maya Le Tissier joined the Lionesses’ celebrations yesterday, after England triumphed over Spain 3 – 1 in penalties at the women’s Euros final.
As an unused substitute on the day, it means Maya is still tied with Matt, on 8 England Caps a piece in the battle of the Le Tissiers.
However, Maya Le Tissier’s inclusion in a squad that not only conquered Europe four years ago, but managed to retain it, means she’s got closer to that silverware than the Le Tissier of the 1990’s.
Spain had opened the scoring, going 0 – 1 up against England at the 25 minute mark, when winger Mariona Caldentey put the spanish side ahead with an assist from full back, Ona Batlle.
England levelled the sides up just after half time, when Chloe Kelly provided a perfect opportunity for Alessia Russo, who found the back of the net with 35 minutes remaining.
The score stayed stationary until a back and forth penalty shootout which saw slips, retakes, and some incredible saves, until Kelly turned from provider to penalty star, slotting home from the spot, and sending the silverware back to the UK.
