Eight open water swimmers are taking on a mammoth challenge, swimming from Alderney’s northern coast to Swanage on England’s south coast.

They left the most northerly island in the Bailiwick at 08.50, having had yesterday’s planned start delayed by 24 hours due to fog.

They’re not expected to finish before the 30 hour mark tomorrow afternoon.

According to their online tracker, which you can access HERE, they’ve already cleared Pointe des Groins in France, and were now well into the Channel at the time of publication.

Ahead of the challenge, organisers said some called the challenge impossible, and they’re out to prove naysayers wrong.

“This swim has never been attempted before and some say it’s impossible. It is a distance of at least 56 miles and if successful, we estimate it will take over 30 hours to complete.”

The challenge is charitable as well as physical for all involved.

“We are raising money for two charities: The Marine Conservation Society, and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, (RNLI),” the organisers said.
