Football fans can take part in this summer’s World Cup without having to leave their own homes.

Guernsey Rovers AC are running another competition to engage local fans in the competition in America, with an online and paper based version so everyone can take part.

Rovers’ President, Paul Porter said the club will update a league table on its website after every game so everyone can follow the action.

The money raised through the competition will support grass roots football and the wider community in Guernsey, he said, with Rovers’ ground also being home to other sports and events.

Ultimately, Mr Porter hopes the competition can bring the World Cup experience home for local football fans.

“Our competitions aren’t just about making a profit, hopefully those who enter will have a bit more interest in the World Cup,” he said.

The competition involves predicting who will come where in the group stages, and the scores in each of those games.

You also need to guess other outcomes including how many red cards will be issued throughout the tournament and the time of the first goal scored in the final on 14 July.

It costs £5 to enter the competition and Rovers hope it will be as popular as their previous ones.

Mr Porter told Express they’ve arranged one for every major football tournament since Euro 96 and the money raised supports their grassroots club.

“Funds raised over and above the prize money have been used to make improvements within the clubhouse,” he explained.

“In previous years, this has included upgrades to the patio area for those watching sport at Port Soif, redecoration, lighting improvements and the like.”

Past competition have enjoyed a wide ranging appeal, Mr Porter said, with this summer’s offering already attracting international entrants.

“We have run these competitions for every major football tournament since Euro 1996 and anyone can enter,” he explained. “We have already received for this year’s competition entries from Jersey and expat Guerns in the UK, Majorca and Romania.”

The competition can be entered online via a form from the club’s website.

As each match is played, the league table of entrants will be updated and made available for everyone to check on the Rovers’ website.
