Guernsey’s Commonwealth Games Association has named a 20-strong squad for this summer’s Glasgow Games.

It’s the island’s smallest Games squad in more than a decade, down from 28 in 2022 and 38 in 2014, following the removal of several sports such as road cycling, badminton, and triathlon.

The event was scaled down when Glasgow stepped in to take on hosting duties after Victoria in Australia pulled out because of escalating costs.

That means some sporting stalwarts who have previously represented the island internationally are unable to do so this year, but the man leading the event believes it will be a game-changing moment for Commonwealth sport.

Who is representing Guernsey?

In Athletics we’ll see both Olympian Alastair Chalmers and Abi Galpin representing the island in Glasgow between 24 July and 2 August.

For Indoor Bowls, Alison Merrien MBE, Rose Ogier, Ian Merrien, and Jason Greenslade will take to the green.

In boxing, Tommy Teers, and Niall Adams will fight under the Guernsey flag.

Fittingly for an island, the largest team travelling from Guernsey will be competing in Swimming.

Tatiana Tostevin, Oriana Wheeler, Orla Rabey, Delphine Riley, Emma Bourgaize, Molly Staples, Elodie Riley, Talullah-Mae Rautenbach, Charlie-Joe Hallett, Ronny Hallett, Zachary Maiden, and Henry Bolton will all take to the pool this summer.

Sadly Lucy Beere won’t be representing the island after she withdrew from selection, whilst previous competitors for Guernsey weren’t considered for selection due to their sports’ absence from the Glasgow Games.

The GCGA acknowledged that the decision to drop some sports is “disappointing for many Guernsey Athletes”, however the man leading the team is keen to face challenges head on.

“I am extremely pleased to be able to support a wonderful group of talented athletes at the Games, and together with our General Team Manager, Karina Jackson, we will embrace the challenges of the multi-cultural and multi-sport Games that we expect to progress for future Games,” said Peter Jory, Chef de Mission.
