Guernsey’s Heather Watson came from behind to win her first US Open qualifying match in New York.
Playing against sixth seed, America’s Claire Liu, was never going to be easy, but Watson put up strong opposition yesterday.
She was beaten in the first set 4-6, but fought back to win the next two by 6-2 and 6-4.
Hoping to make it to her first appearance in the US open main-draw in 5 years, Watson still has two more rounds of qualifying to get through.
Tomorrow she will play Spain’s Angela Fita Boluda.
Watson’s hopes of reaching the US Open main-draw follows a disappointing summer where she missed out on a place at Wimbledon after battling injury over the past year.
It was the first time she hadn’t featured in the main-draw at SW19 in more than 15 years.
The US Open holds special memories for Watson too, after she famously won the junior competition in 2009.
