Heather Watson has been given a ‘wild card’ entry into this year’s Wimbledon singles tournament.
The 33-year-old did not automatically qualify for this year’s competition but earlier this week it was announced that she – and other British players including Dan Evans – have been given wild card entries.
Wild card entries are chosen at the discretion of the Wimbledon committee either on the basis of past performances at Wimbledon or to increase British interest.
Watson’s current ranking is 164th in the world.
She’s previously been ranked as high as 38th.
She’s won the Wimbledon doubles’ title and reached the fourth round of the women’s singles before being knocked out by Serena Williams.
This year’s Wimbledon tournament begins on 30 June.
