From cliff paths and castle views to a $800,000 triathlon finale, Jersey is set to host a huge sporting weekend in September after three of the Island’s biggest endurance events decided to join forces in a bid to attract athletes and spectators from around the world.

The packed sporting weekend, taking place on 5 and 6 September, will bring together Swim Run Jersey, the JSAC Hearty Half Marathon and the Supertri Pro Series Final.

Saturday: starting at the castle

Organisers hope the combined programme will encourage visitors to spend longer on the island while showcasing Jersey as a destination for sport and tourism.

The action begins on Saturday with Swim Run Jersey, which sees competitors tackle a course combining trail running and open-water swimming around the island’s coastline, starting beneath Mont Orgueil Castle.

Sunday: A Hearty Half and Supertri

On Sunday morning, runners will take to the roads for the JSAC Hearty Half Marathon.

The weekend culminates on the Waterfront, where some of the world’s leading short-course triathletes will compete in the Supertri Pro Series Final.

Athletes will be racing for a share of an $800,000 prize purse.

The event will mark the sixth time Supertri has brought elite racing to Jersey.

Andrew Thomas, Managing Director of 3D Events, said the combination of mass-participation races and elite competition created a unique opportunity for the island.

“The opportunity for competitors to race around Jersey’s spectacular coastline on Saturday before watching some of the world’s very best short-course triathletes battle for serious prize money on Sunday makes this a truly unique sporting weekend,” he said.

“The island has an amazing atmosphere”

Michael D’hulst, CEO and Co-Founder of Supertri, said Jersey was an “incredible sporting destination because it offers so much more than just a race venue”.

“The island has an amazing atmosphere, a passionate community and some truly spectacular scenery, which makes it a fantastic experience for athletes and spectators alike,” he added.

“We’re really excited to be part of such a special weekend of sport and to celebrate endurance racing alongside Swim Run Jersey and the JSAC Half Marathon. We’re looking forward to getting involved with the other events across the weekend and supporting the wider sporting community on the island.”

Visit Jersey chief executive Tricia Warwick said events with international appeal could make a significant contribution to the visitor economy.

“The right events, with the reach and appeal to drive incremental visitors to the island, make a real difference to Jersey’s visitor economy,” she said, adding that the proposed “endurance” sporting weekend was a “good example”

“We hope athletes and spectators alike take the time to explore everything Jersey has to offer.”
