Gift a fruit tree for Christmas!

Islanders are being urged to consider gifting locally grown fruit trees to help replace those lost in Storm Ciarán.

As well as helping to replenish uprooted trees, the idea also aims to increase biodiversity, and support local producers.

The initiative is being spearheaded by the SCOOP Sustainable Cooperative, which is based at La Bienvenue Farm in St Lawrence, in collaboration with local grower and Genuine Jersey member, Marc Riley from Jersey Trees and Hedging.

For £50 including delivery, islanders can purchase a gift card for a range of fruit trees, including eating apples and heritage cider apples, which will be delivered in February for planting.

Marc Riley from Jersey Trees and Hedging said: "I think it’s a great idea, not only to help to replace many of the trees which have been lost but to also to get people into growing and to learn the history of cider making, which was once the biggest trade and export of its time in Jersey. It is a hobby that anyone can get into with a bit of reading and time collecting fruit.

"For over a decade now I have been trying to keep the Jersey cider varieties going in the island by grafting them onto rootstock and then later took to grafting the many eating and cooking varieties that I also stock.

"Planting fruit trees is a very beneficial practice to the island, not only to supply some with fruit but it also helps many pollinators including honey bees and other types of wildlife that then eat remaining fruit.

"On top of all this, you are also supporting local businesses. SCOOP have been a great aid to myself as well as many other local growers that pride themselves on not only the quality products they produce but also the genuine jersey labels that they put on them."
