Two fire engines and nine firefighters were called out to rescue an islander from a fire in a third-floor flat last night.

The resident was given precautionary checks but was unharmed, Jersey Fire and Rescue Service confirmed.

The service received multiple calls regarding smoke visible from the flat in St Helier at around 22:30 on Saturday night.

Two fire engines and nine firefighters were immediately dispatched to the incident where the resident was still inside the property.

The fire service said: “Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus quickly forced entry before removing the casualty, and extinguished the blaze using high pressure hose reels.

“The casualty received precautionary checks and thankfully was unharmed, however we would like to remind the community of the importance of having working, regularly tested smoke detection in your property.”
