DIGEST: How much are people earning in Jersey?

Friday 09 February 2024

The latest stats for how much people are earning in Jersey are in... and, perhaps unsurprisingly, they show that Jersey wages aren't going as far as before.

Published yesterday by Statistics Jersey, the latest figures – for June 2023 – also reveal differences in wages by age and sector, and give an insight into the state of the gender pay gap.

The stats were produced using data held by the Government for administrative purposes, including Social Security contributions, and provide a snapshot of how much earnings have changed in Jersey since June 2022.

Express gives an overview...

A drop in real-terms

Overall median earnings for the month were recorded as being around £3,480, representing an increase of 8.8% from June 2022.

However, after taking into account inflation, the figures actually mark a 2% decrease in real-terms.

It comes after inflation hit a high last year – reaching double digits for the first time in decades.

Wages by ages

Those aged 45 to 49 had the highest median earnings (£4,140).

Meanwhile, those in the 16 to 19 age bracket had the lowest (£1,770).

Which sectors are earning the most?

By sector, the highest median earnings were brought in by those involved with financial and legal activities (£4,910).

Those working in hotels, restaurants and bars had the lowest (£2,400).

The largest increase, compared to June 2022, was seen in the agriculture and fishing sector.

By nationality, the highest median earnings were seen among South African employees (£4,880) while Kenyan employees were recorded as having the lowest (£2,440).

The report added that: "It is worth noting that a high proportion of South African employees (63%) worked in the highest paying sector, finance and legal activities.

"Additionally, a high proportion of Kenyan employees (73%) worked in the lowest paying sector, hotels, restaurants and bars."

The gender pay gap

Median earnings for men and women for June 2023 were £3,660 and £3,260 respectively, producing an overall gender pay gap of 12% - which is the same as it was in June 2022.

The gap was largest in the information and communication sector (28%) and lowest among those working in education, health and other services (4%).
