Quick-thinking residents praised after fire in storage area

Tuesday 26 July 2022

The residents of a block of flats in Seaton Place were evacuated last night after one of them spotted smoke coming from the ground floor storage area.

Two fire engines were sent to the flats at around 21:20 last night.

On arrival, crews wearing breathing apparatus attempted to enter the storage area but were met with thick black smoke and intense heat.

The conditions made it difficult for the fire crew to get into the building, but they were eventually able to bring the fire under control.

An additional fire engine crew also joined to assist in clearing and checking the smoke-logged flats.

Jersey Fire and Rescue acknowledged the "quick and immediate actions of one of the residents" in contacting them, which meant that the occupants of the nearby flats were able to evacuate safely.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
