Trinity Deputy still on ballot after undergoing heart surgery

Deputy Hugh Raymond will be still be taking part in the election next week after undergoing major heart surgery yesterday.

The family of the Trinity representative said they were “relieved and delighted” after the Jersey Alliance candidate safely came through surgery in Oxford.

They added that he was keen to fight next week’s election and represent the district of St. John, St. Lawrence and Trinity in the next Assembly.

It is understood that Deputy Raymond suffered a mild heart attack in Jersey last week and was sent to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford for further checks. There, it was found that surgery was needed straight away.

“We cannot say when he will be back, but his candidacy is very much alive,” said a family friend. “It will take a few weeks of rehabilitation, but his name will definitely be on the ballot.”

Deputy Raymond was first elected to the States in 2018 and holds several Assistant Minister roles. The former teacher, UK borough councillor and tennis development officer has taken the political lead on sports issues and the redevelopment of Fort Regent.
