Dr Vicki Nash is a director at the University of Oxford’s Internet Institute and hold several policy advisory roles on internet safety, platform governance and digital regulations.
She spoke with the ODPA’s Data Protection Commissioner Brent Homan on the balance that must be struck between empowering children with technology while also being mindful of the need to protect them from harm.
In the talk they encourage parents and carers to openly share their experience with children and ensure that education leaders are routinely informing children of safety measures.
They also consider the recently passed Online Safety Act and imagine what people will think in 2054 of how well tech companies, parents and politicians acted in this period.
“It was truly inspiring to hear Dr Nash’s holistic perspective on what it takes to advance children’s data rights in the digital era, a passion shared by our office”, said Mr Homan. “I also appreciate her openness to doing a little ‘Back to the Future’ role-play to bring those points home”.
