Thousands of pounds have been raised by Sarnia Hotel guests for Guernsey Trees for Life by opting out of daily housekeeping during their stay.
The guests raised £10,278 for the local environmental charity, and in response it gifted a tree to the hotel group which has been planted on the grounds of the Hotel de Havelet.
Sarnia Hotels introduced the scheme last year, donating £2 every time a guest chooses to go without a room clean.
3,392 people opted out during the first 13 months which has allowed a donation which equates to over 1,100 native trees and shrubs, tree guards and cable ties.
Volunteers from the charity plant the trees and carry out the planning.
Karel Harris, Managing Director of Sarnia Hotels, said: “We’re so pleased to see uptake of this initiative. In August alone, over 300 room cleans were skipped at Les Rocquettes Hotel.
“It’s such a small change but it’s had a big impact and allows us and our guests to contribute to a greener Guernsey. We know how important it is to protect the environment around us, and we’re proud to support the work of Guernsey Trees for Life.”
