The Institute of Directors is looking for students to take part in its Future Leaders programme.
The scheme pairs students with senior business leaders for a two to three-day placement. During this time, students observe how leaders motivate, advise, and support their teams, providing invaluable insights into effective leadership.
The programme, supported by KPMG, Source Recruitment, and Orchard PR, is aimed to be more than just a traditional “work experience” like students experience through secondary education, focusing on observation and learning, and allowing students to understand the nuances of leadership in a business setting.
Participants are also encouraged to ask questions and engage with their mentors, fostering a deeper understanding of leadership styles and strategies.
At the end of their placements, students will present their learnings to a panel of judges. The top ten students are then invited to re-present their findings at a high-profile finals evening at the OGH, with the overall winner receiving the Martyn Mann Trophy
In a statement announcing the launch, the IoD adds that the “programme not only enriches students’ CVs but also builds their confidence and presentation skills, preparing them for future leadership roles. The IoD Leadership Shadowing Programme continues to be a cornerstone in developing the next generation of leaders in Guernsey.”
The programme is supported by Linda Johnson of KPMG and Source Recruitment, who coordinates student placements, matching them with business leaders, while Orchard PR provides presentation training.
All sponsors play an active role in judging and contribute significant time and expertise to the scheme’s success.

KPMG Partner Linda Johnson, who co-coordinates the scheme, said: “The Guernsey IoD Leadership Shadowing scheme is a unique opportunity that offers young people an excellent chance to observe a business leader in the workplace over the course of several days, and gain an insight into how they approach their roles.
“We are very fortunate to be able to offer this enriching scheme to Guernsey’s Y12 students and to have such incredible support from business leaders. The scheme continues to grow each year, with around 60 students taking part each year. KPMG are delighted to be a long-term sponsor of the scheme.”
