The husband-and-wife team behind a local seafood, fishing and processing business are celebrating winning a key industry accolade for their “exemplary” handpicked crab.

The Guild of Fine Food has awarded the business two Great Taste stars to Jersey Seafood its Jersey crab meat.

Boat to plate

Jersey Seafood is a family-run business, led by husband-and-wife duo Jonathan and Victoria De La Haye.

Fisherman Mr De La Haye and HACCP and food management-qualified Mrs De La Haye have over 35 years’ experience in fishing and processing.

They fish from their J38 boat 12 months of the year in all weather conditions to source produce that is from “boat to plate”.

They also export to the UK, including Billingsgate Market and Michelin star restaurants.

An inviting aroma

The judges’ comments on Jersey Seafood’s hand-picked crab meat praised its texture, flavour and condition.

“Attractive crab meat with a very inviting aroma, this is fresh and tasty with a pleasing texture and incredible, moreish depth of flavour,” the judges said.

“White crab meat consisting of visually appealing flaky and chunkier pieces of crab, this has a fresh and savoury aroma. The texture is juicy and plump with a good chew. A high quality sweet crab meat of a generous consistency.

“This is a sweet, fresh tasting crab with a hint of marine salinity, which does not dominate the taste. The chunks are generous and the flakes luscious.”

Chunks of meat “picked with such care”

They continued: “As soon as we opened the container of this crab we were transported to the sea.

“Big chunks of meat had obviously been picked with such care, retaining the texture and springiness that was such a pleasure to eat.

“Sublimely fresh and with a delicate but also intense flavour, this is exemplary prepared crab which we want to have in a salad or through linguine with lemon.”
