A minority investment from specialist partnership capital firm will provide Mourant with additional firepower to invest in artificial intelligence, talent and international expansion, as the professional services group embarks on its next phase of growth.
Mourant has announced what it describes as a landmark funding agreement with MML, a specialist investor in professional services firms, in a move designed to accelerate investment across its integrated legal, governance and consulting platform.
The Jersey-headquartered group said the minority equity investment would support further spending on technology – particularly AI-enabled systems and data infrastructure – alongside enhanced career development, geographic expansion and targeted mergers and acquisitions.
Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
Mourant employs around 1,000 people across nine international finance centres and provides legal, corporate, governance and fund administration services to private capital firms, banks, institutional investors and multinational businesses.
The firm’s existing owners will remain in control of the business and are co-investing alongside MML. Ownership and governance of Mourant’s separate law firm entities will also remain unchanged.
Chief executive Jonathan Rigby said the investment would increase the pace of the firm’s growth rather than alter its long-term strategy.
“We have built something genuinely distinctive – an enduring multi-disciplinary professional services group that serves the world’s most sophisticated institutional clients across legal, governance and consulting, all under one umbrella.
“This investment does not change what we are building. It changes the pace at which we can build it.”
He added that clients could expect “the same Mourant they know, for the long term, with greater capability and momentum behind it”.
Robert Devonshire, a partner at MML, described Mourant as “the most compelling platform in its market”, citing its integrated business model and long-term growth ambitions.
The transaction follows the creation of Mourant Group Limited last year, which brought together the group’s governance and consulting businesses, operational infrastructure and brand under a single holding company.
