A new co-working and events space has opened within a private members’ club in the Royal Square.

The United Club’s former snooker room has been transformed into a “premium professional hub designed to meet the needs of a modern workforce”.

The space now operates as a premium “rent-a-desk” co-working hub by day, and as an elegant venue for meetings, private functions and networking events by night.

United Club President Christopher Dobbing said: “Most communal workspace in St Helier is either very expensive or very busy.

“Our new space provides our members with a free-of-charge place to catch up on emails, take a call or host a business meeting.”

The space has been named ‘The Heavey Room’ after Irish author and playwright Yvonne Heavey following a membership ballot.

Ms Heavey said she was “deeply honoured”.

“As an Irish woman, I’ve always felt that culture comes before the individual, it shapes us, steadies us, and gives us our voice,” she explained.

“Having spent so much of my life in Jersey, I’ve come to see the same instinct here, a deep respect for heritage, paired with a gentle, thoughtful move into the new.

“The Heavey Room feels like a beautiful expression of that balance, modern in purpose, but rooted in what the club, and the island, hold dear.”

An official opening reception took place on Wednesday featuring a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Lieutenant-Bailiff and United Club committee member Robert Christensen.

“Institutions endure not by resisting change but by shaping it,” he said.

“The Heavey Room is a fine example of how a historic club can adapt its purpose while preserving its character.

“It is a thoughtful reinvention of space that will serve today’s professionals without losing sight of the club’s identity.”

The United Club membership is £420 a year.
