Art Circle

This course invites anyone with an interest in painting to explore and expand their creative ability through mixed media. It is open to all levels, whether you are a beginner or someone looking to reconnect with their creativity. Explore, Experiment, Create!

The focus of the session is on experimentation and discovery.

Participants will be encouraged to try new techniques and materials, and to step outside their usual ways of working in a relaxed and supportive environment.

Alongside painting, the course includes gentle exercises that incorporate relaxation and mindful creativity. These moments are designed to help and slow down, become more present, and connect with the creative process.

Rather than focusing on producing a finished painting, the course emphasises the foundation of painting practice: understanding colour, exploring mark making, experimenting with blending colours and developing confidence with materials.

This is a space to play, and develop your artistic voice while enjoying the process of painting.

The workshop will take place on Saturday the 20th June from 1pm at the Victorian Walled Kitchen Garden, Saumarez Park.

5QTC Presents: The Full Monty

The 5 Quarters Theatre Company are back with another fabulous production!

Based on the hit 1997 film, The Full Monty is set in post-industrial Sheffield and follows six unemployed steelworkers grappling with loss of work, identity, and self-esteem. When Gaz, a struggling father, spots a male strip show pulling in big crowds, he hatches a bold plan: he and his mates will form their own act – and go “the full monty.”

As they prepare for the show, the men confront personal challenges including body image, mental health, and broken relationships.

Funny, moving, and rooted in working-class spirit, the play is a heartfelt celebration of resilience, community, and daring to bare it all.

A total of 4 performances will take place at the Princess Royal Centre for The Performing Arts from Wednesday the 24th June – Saturday the 27th June. Each performance starts at 7pm.

Victor Lim – Piano Recital

The Fanny Davies International Piano Series returns to St James next Wednesday the 24th June!

The Fanny Davies International Piano Series seeks to cultivate a deeper appreciation for piano music among both existing and new concertgoers.

Described as a pianist with ‘nuance and perfect flexibility’ (Revista Arta), South Korean-British pianist Victor Lim has performed worldwide to great acclaim. He is currently Director of Piano at Roskell Academy.

At St James, he performs a programme called ‘Laughter and Crying’, in which he takes us on an emotional journey through attractive gems of the piano repertoire, including Liszt’s ‘Un Sospiro’, a Fauré Nocturne, and Schumann’s Humoreske. Schumann’s music is always raw and emotionally spontaneous (he suffered from severe mental health issues, survived a suicide attempt, and ended his life in relative isolation in a private asylum). While writing this Humoreske, he wrote, ‘All week I’ve been sitting at the piano and composing and writing and laughing and crying, all at the same time”.

Please drop in at the free workshop and don’t miss the chance to chat with Victor after the concert!

The workshop starts at 4pm, followed by the recital at 7pm. The ‘Meet the Artist’ Reception will take place c. 8:30pm.

For any young pianists interested in participating in the piano workshop, please email Alan West – awest@cwgsy.net.

Kindly supported by The Swallow 2018 Charitable Trust, The Guernsey Arts Commission and the John Ireland Charitable Trust

The Last Viking (Screening)

Subs Not Dubs returns to Mallard Cinema next Thursday the 25th June with a screening of The Last Viking (2025), the latest dark comedy film from Thomas Anders Jensen starring Mads Mikkelsen.

The film follows a recently released prisoner as he plans to recover stolen loot that his brother, Manfred (Mikkelsen), buried in the woods. However, when Manfred can’t remember the exact location, they set out on an increasingly chaotic and emotional journey to find it.

The Hollywood Reporter calls The Last Viking “…consistently entertaining, weird and ultimately touching” and notes that “Its humane message is potent even though it comes in the offbeat package of this gleeful, violent but entirely successful dark comedy.”

Wynter Tyson, founder of Subs Not Dubs, said “Jensen’s Riders of Justice is one of the most accomplished comedies that I’ve screened in almost ten years of showing films, combined with the presence of regular collaborators such as Mads Mikkelsen, and The Last Viking promises to be another off-beat gem and film best experienced with a crowd.”

Tickets can be booked via www.mallardcinema.co.uk or on the Mallard Cinema app.
