A free public lecture taking place next week will show how climate change resilience can be achieved using smart technology.
The Channel Islands Group of Professional Engineers (CIGPE) is hosting a lecture called “Improving Climate Change Resilience Using Smart Technology,” at 19:30 on Wednesday 16 September at Les Cotils.
Brian Back BEng (Hons) CEng FIET will give the lecture, drawing on nearly 40 years of engineering experience.
Using real world-world case studies from water, environmental and infrastructure sectors, Mr Back will challenge the assumption that climate resilence can only be achieved through expensive infrasturcture replacement.
Instead, he will show that intelligent monitoring, real-time data and adaptive control systems can maximise existing infrastructure’s performance. These adaptations can allow networks and assets to respond dynamically to changing weather patterns and extreme conditions.
Mr Back will argue the importance of a simple but important message: “before replacing infrastructure, engineers should first consider whether existing assets can be made smarter.”
