Due to regulations currently in place to control the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, the annual ceremony to commemorate Australians and New Zealanders who died in the Great War has been cancelled.
Anzac Day ceremonies have been held throughout Australia and New Zealand and around the world - for almost 100 years - at dawn on 25 April. That is the time when soldiers from both countries landed on Turkey’s Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915. It was first time these armed forces had fought under their own flag and command.
Today Anzac Day is one of the most important dates in the year for Australians and New Zealanders and the Jersey ceremony was due to be held at the Cenotaph in the Parade.
In spite of the ceremony being cancelled wreaths shall still be laid at the Cenotaph on behalf of the Crown, the people of Jersey and the Government.
Ceremony organiser John Davis said: ‘Clearly the safety of Islanders is paramount, and while we will miss the dawn service this year, we continue to receive support from the Australian and New Zealand Defence Forces who had identified officers to attend, which has now sadly been cancelled.
‘I am sure however that all Australians and New Zealanders will reflect on the events at Gallipoli on the 25th April, and even more so, reflect on the support the medical support gave then just as much as they do today.’
