Another one of Jersey’s most popular fundraisers has been cancelled. Diabetes Jersey’s annual North2South Country Walk – scheduled for Sunday 3 May this year - has developed a dedicated following of around 600 walkers who enjoy discovering some of Jersey’s least known country lanes but will not now take place.

The initial concept of crossing the Island north to south was pioneered by the late Brian le Marquand MBE as a change from the common trek along the St Aubin’s Bay seafront.

“Obviously we are very disappointed for everyone involved in organising the event and the many who have already registered to participate whose payments will be refunded,” says Diabetes Jersey chairman Bill O’Brien. “But in the current circumstances, it is the only possible decision. Similarly, we are cancelling our monthly bingo evenings at the Mayfair Hotel until at least July and our very popular race night at the Merton Hotel on Friday 15 May will be postponed.  While cancelling such events will have an impact on the charity, we can assure all those who currently benefit from the charity’s funding that they will not be affected.”

Diabetes has been identified as one of the underlying medical conditions associated with the coronavirus so the charity believes it would be most inappropriate not to heed every advice from the health authorities. The charity’s principal role will always be to support the people in the Island with the condition by fund-raising and a continuing process of raising public awareness.  Diabetes Jersey has an excellent relationship with the health authorities and one of its priorities will be to maintain and develop that relationship for the benefit of the more than 4,500 local residents who have the condition.
