Refuse and Recycling Services

The Constable of St Helier and his team continue to work closely with the Government of Jersey on plans to support and protect members of the community from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Services provided by the Parish are rapidly adapting to the changing circumstances, and we are making some changes to our refuse and recycling services to prioritise the safety of staff and parishioners.

With the recent move to home working and an increase in home delivery services, we have experienced a significant increase in the amount of household waste across the Parish. Over recent days, there has also been an increase in the number of recycling bags containing inappropriate waste, such as tissues, nappies and cleaning cloths. In the current situation, this presents an increased risk to our staff processing recycling. Whilst we have issued protective equipment to our teams, it is clear that we need to do more to protect them as they undertake their work for all our benefit.

Recycling Services

The parishes of St Helier and St Saviour work together to collect and process recycling. The Constables of St Helier and St Saviour have decided to temporarily suspend household recycling collection and processing, with effect from Friday 27th March. The service will recommence as soon as it is practical and safe to do so. Parishioners are asked to safely store recyclable material wherever possible; otherwise to place it in with normal refuse.

Both parishes remain committed to household recycling collection and processing, and look forward to recommencing the service as soon as possible.

Refuse

St Helier refuse collections will continue as normal with collections on scheduled days. Parishioners are asked to place all waste in wheelie bins as normal.

In order to adhere to social distancing guidelines, we are changing the way our refuse teams work. Our teams will travel in two separate vehicles, enabling the entire crew to adhere to social distancing guidelines throughout their round.

If you, or a member of your household, has flu-like symptoms, please ensure that personal waste (such as used tissues) and disposable cleaning cloths are stored securely within disposable rubbish bags. These bags should be placed into a second bag, tied securely and kept separate from other waste in the area in which you are self-isolating. Please keep this aside for at least 72 hours before putting into your usual bin.
